New look on interactions between clouds and transpiration by trees in European forests

New research shows a clear link between different cloud types and the transpiration in European forests. An international team of researchers has estimated how changes in cloudiness affect the amount of moisture released by trees into the atmosphere – something that also influences Earth’s water cycle.

Understanding Earth’s energy balance: the science behind the 2026 Crafoord Prize

Clouds above the Pacific, soot drifting from agricultural fires, polluted sea spray rising from warming oceans. At this year’s Crafoord Prize Symposium in Geosciences in Stockholm, leading climate researchers gathered to explore one of the defining scientific questions of our time: how aerosols, clouds and other climate pollutants are reshaping Earth’s energy balance, and what that means for societies around the world.

  • Tellus relaunches with first publications spanning atmospheric processes, ocean change, and climate research

The scientific journal Tellus has been relaunched as a unified, independent, and scientist-led platform for Earth system science. The first set of publications reflects this renewed scope, bringing together research that advances understanding of the processes and interactions shaping the Earth system in a changing climate. With an expanded editorial structure and broader scientific scope, Tellus aims to publish high-quality, interdisciplinary research across the atmosphere, oceans, land, cryosphere, and biosphere—fields that are increasingly interconnected in the study of global environmental change.

  • Broad research for climate transition

The societal climate transition requires integrated knowledge from several disciplines. Karin Bäckstrand wants to create a research environment with inter-disciplinary expertise from Stockholm University, Karolinska Institutet and KTH – and the Swedish Research Council is proposing funding.

New global system needed to track methane’s hidden climate risks

A new Policy Forum paper in Science calls for a step change in how the world monitors methane – a greenhouse gas that plays a critical role in near-term climate warming. Led by researchers at Woodwell Climate Center and co-authored by Gustaf Hugelius, co-director of the Bolin Centre, the paper highlights a key blind spot in current climate efforts: natural methane emissions are both substantial and poorly tracked.
