Relaunched Tellus outlines its direction in first editorial

The first publication from the relaunched Tellus journal is now available. The editorial outlines the journal’s scope and direction as a platform for interdisciplinary Earth system science.

Founded in 1948, Tellus has a long-standing role in publishing research in atmospheric and ocean sciences. Following its recent relaunch, the journal returns with an expanded focus on interdisciplinary research addressing the Earth system and climate change.

The newly published editorial introduces this direction and sets out the journal’s guiding principles. It emphasises scientific quality, openness, and a community-oriented approach to publishing, and positions Tellus as a venue for research that spans traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Reflecting on the journal’s legacy and future, Editor-in-Chief Ilona Riipinen says:

Rossby concluded his interview for Time in 1956 by saying, ‘Nature can be vengeful. We should have a great deal of respect for the planet on which we live.’ Revitalizing Tellus feels like the right way to pay these respects—and now feels like the right time to do so.”

Tellus operates under a Diamond Open Access model, meaning that neither authors nor readers are charged publication fees. This supports broader accessibility and participation in scientific publishing.
