Research area Political Science

Political conversations take place everywhere – in the UN, in the Swedish parliament, at our dinner tables, in the media. Whether it is about current politics or eternal philosophical dilemmas, issues concerning the governance of society and how our community should be organized are always of immediate interest. Political science focuses on these problems.

The American political scientist Robert Dahl argues that political science is about studying power – power and power relations at different levels of society and in all possible forms. However, the subject is broad and includes several different specialisations, such as Swedish politics, international relations, political theory, public administration and comparative politics – but also questions of development, gender and the EU.

Comparative Politics

Comparative politics is the study of how countries are governed, ranging from ordinary citizens to political elites and core political institutions. Much of the research in the field seeks to explain differences and similarities between political systems, and the consequences these have.

Environmental Politics

Research efforts are focused on three main areas: global environmental governance, comparative environmental politics, and learning and participation in natural resource management.

International Politics

International politics examines how states, international organizations, companies, civil society, and other actors interact across borders. Much research in the field seeks to explain cooperation and conflict in world politics.

Political Theory

Research in political theory focuses on central political ideals and concepts such as democracy, equality, justice and freedom.

Public Policy and Administration

How are societies governed, and how do political ambitions translate into public policies and collective action? Public policy and administration research examines the organization and exercise of public power, and the roles of different societal actors in shaping policies and their outcomes.
