How are societies governed, and how do political ambitions translate into public policies and collective action? Public policy and administration research examines the organization and exercise of public power, and the roles of different societal actors in shaping policies and their outcomes.
Governing contemporary societies involves complex relationships between public organizations, markets, and civil society. Research in the field explores how public policies at different levels are formulated, implemented, and transformed, and how different governing arrangements shape the functioning of the public sector. Central questions concern the changing relationships between politicians, civil servants, and other societal actors, as well as the consequences of public sector reforms. In doing so, the research contributes to our understanding of democratic governance, public accountability, and the capacity to address societal challenges.
