Research project Sustainable Work in Retail

The project aims to generate both broad knowledge about patterns within the retail sector and a deeper understanding of how preventive work environment management can be strengthened.

A long row of shopping carts.

The retail sector has a low proportion of employees on long-term sickness absence but high levels of short-term sickness absence, particularly among young people. Women account for a large proportion of long-term sickness cases, while threats, violence, and high workloads are recurring problems.

Against the background of the sector’s clear age and gender patterns, the aim is to increase knowledge about the importance of the work environment for employees’ work-related attitudes, behaviours, and health.

The project examines how risk and protective factors are distributed across different groups, how they relate to work-related outcomes, managers’ experiences of their work situation and work environment management, and the role of managerial support in creating a socially sustainable work environment.
