About me

Associate Professor Mika Sipponen is a Docent in Materials Chemistry at Stockholm University and a Wallenberg Academy Fellow. He obtained his Doctor of Science (Technology) degree in Chemical Technology from Aalto University, Finland, in 2015 under the supervision of Prof. Simo Laakso. His doctoral research focused on lignocellulosic biorefineries, industrial biotechnology, and the development of sustainable processes for biomass valorisation.

Since 2019, Sipponen has led the Sustainable Materials Chemistry (SUSMATCHEM) research group at Stockholm University. The group develops functional materials from lignin and other industrial side streams, combining experimental materials chemistry across disciplines such as biotechnology and engineering. The research aims to enable sustainable solutions in areas such agriculture, built environment, and circular material systems.

Sipponen’s research has been supported by competitive funding from major national and international agencies, including the European Research Council (ERC), Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW), and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF).

Selected achievements:

  • Wallenberg Academy Fellow, Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (2023)
  • ERC Starting Grant (2022)
  • SSF Future Research Leader, FFL8 (2022)
  • Formas Early Career Grant (2022)
  • Coordinator, ERA-NET ForestValue project BarkBuild (2022-2025)
  • Vetenskapsrådet Starting Grant (2021)
  • Nouryon Nordic Prize (2020)
  • Academy of Finland Postdoctoral Grant (2016)

Teacher for Green Chemistry (KZ4101), BSc level.

Examiner for Chemistry of Renewable Materials (KZ8022), MSc level.

Examiner for Advanced Materials Chemistry (KZ44019), PhD level.

The research focus areas:

  • Valorization of industrial side-streams and residues
