Mathematical Communication

How do we communicate mathematics in speech and writing, depending on the audience and the context?

The course covers

  • TeX and LaTeX. Presentations in Beamer and PowerPoint.
  • Mathematical popular science; writing popular science articles in mathematics.
  • Orientation and publishing in mathematical journals; writing scientific articles in mathematics.
  • Giving mathematical lectures or talks, both of a scientific and a popular science nature.
  • Getting information on relevant ethical and social aspects of research in pure and applied mathematics.
  • Questions about responsibility of how mathematics/mathematical statistics/applied mathematics is used in the industry, in everyday life, and in social surveys.

This course is part of several of our master's programmes, but can also be taken as a free-standing course.

The course consists of two modules; home assignments and project work.


Teaching Format

Instruction consists of lectures, seminars and exercises. Participation in all instruction is compulsory.


Assessment

The course is assessed through written and oral presentations of home assignments and project work.

Examiner

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
