SUBIC Contributes to SVT Series The Dementia Choir

The SVT Play series The Dementia Choir highlights how choir singing can promote social interaction, stimulate memory, and support quality of life for people living with dementia. Research conducted at the Stockholm University Brain Imaging Centre (SUBIC) contributes scientific insight into how music influences brain activity and cognitive ageing.

The television series follows a choir composed of individuals living with dementia, including people diagnosed at a younger age. Under the leadership of Anders Bagge and choir director Sofia Lilja, the choir prepares for a concert at Södra Teatern in Stockholm. The programme illustrates how musical engagement can create a sense of community and support well-being for both participants and their families.
As part of the project, Senior Lecturer László Harmat used the facilities at the Stockholm University Brain Imaging Centre (SUBIC) to study the choir participants’ brains using advanced neuroimaging methods. The research focuses on how regular choir singing affects brain activity, memory functions, and cognitive ageing.
By combining cultural practice with brain imaging research, the project demonstrates how interdisciplinary collaboration can contribute to increased understanding of non-pharmacological approaches to brain health and dementia.
The series is available on SVT Play: Demenskören
