From Draft to Publication: Academic Writing in Practice, 7,5 ECTS

This course is offered by the Department of Teaching and Learning as a part of the Doctoral School in the Humanities. The course is offered during the spring semester of 2027 and on campus.

Course Content

The course focuses on academic writing in English and aims to strengthen doctoral students’ ability to publish research in international scholarly journals and with academic publishers. It is designed for doctoral students in the humanities and takes into account participants’ diverse academic, linguistic, and disciplinary backgrounds, as well as the specific expectations and conventions of different fields.

The course examines the characteristics of high-quality research articles, including their structure and key components. Participants work with linguistic structures, academic vocabulary, and writing strategies that support the production of clear, coherent, and persuasive scholarly texts. The course also addresses differences among academic genres and dissertation formats, such as monographs and article-based dissertations.

In addition, participants receive guidance on the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic writing. The course covers journal selection, adapting manuscripts to journal requirements, the submission process, and strategies for responding professionally and effectively to reviewers’ comments during the peer-review process.

After completing the course, the doctoral student should be able to

  • demonstrate the ability to communicate research effectively and tailor manuscripts to the requirements of relevant scholarly journals and target audiences
  • demonstrate the ability to respond to and integrate reviewers’ comments and critiques in a constructive and effective manner
  • critically and constructively relate to the use of AI in scientific writing

Mandatory elements
