On September 22, Research Friday was held at the AlbaNova University Center and at the House of Science, and this year the event celebrated its 20th anniversary. Hundreds of elementary and high school students had the opportunity to meet researchers from Fysikum, learn about current research, and try their hand at science.
Researcher's Friday is aimed at 9th-grade students and high school students. At the Research Fair at AlbaNova, visitors were able to try out instruments and laboratory equipment, participate in interactive activities, and talk with researchers and students. Using the educational material “Research Orientation,” the students answered questions and completed assignments.
From Fysikum, researchers from the Department of Engineering, the Department of Particle Physics, and doctoral students from FysikShow participated. In AlbaNova’s Light Hall, they demonstrated how coconut balls can expand, how researchers at the South Pole study neutrinos from outer space, and a variety of physics experiments.
At the House of Science, the students met Professor Sara Strandberg, who spoke about her work with the large particle accelerator at CERN in Switzerland. Professor David Milstead led a workshop on particle physics using a cloud chamber.
The students also had the opportunity to visit two laboratories. One was the DESIREE research station, where they learned how researchers study interactions between atoms and molecules. The other was the XENON laboratory, where researchers study dark matter.
