Archive for Equal opportunities
Here you can find out what the Equal Opportunities Committee has achieved in the past.
- 2013 From the Gender Equality Plan for 2013: The representative of the Department of Physics in the colloquium committee will work to ensure that the number of female speakers at the colloquia is at least 20%. The gender equality group at Fysikum has compiled a list of possible female colloquium speakers and forwarded it to the AlbaNova colloquium committee in November 2012.
- 2012 From the Gender Equality Plan for 2012: When a new post is advertised, there must be potential applicants of an under-represented gender, unless there are exceptional reasons. It is the responsibility of the department's representatives to encourage them to apply for the position. Responsible: The Board of the Faculty of Physics.
- Follow-up in 2011: In the assessment of the candidates for the Chair in Elementary Particle Physics, two of the candidates, one male and one female, were found to have a clear advantage over the other candidates. The Department therefore proposed to the Faculty to fill two positions, which was accepted.
- 2011 From the Gender Equality Plan for 2011: The small-scale survey of what has been done on gender equality issues in other physics departments in Sweden and in other countries will be continued and interesting results will be reported to the Board.
- Follow-up 2010: In 2010, contacts with other universities have been increased due to the preparation of the course ‘Physics and Gender’ and the resulting contacts with the Delegation for Gender Equality in Higher Education.
- 2011 From the gender equality plan for 2011: In 2010, the gender equality group will make an inventory of proposals for new forms for a women's network at the department
- Follow-up in 2010: This has been tried before without success. The gender equality group proposes unpretentious meetings for female students and staff, e.g. in the form of a joint lunch.
- Follow-up in 2011: This has been tried in the past without success. No new initiatives have been taken in 2011. The Gender Equality Group formulates this as one of the action points for 2012.
- Follow-up 2013: A first meeting [for that year] of the Women's Network was held on 22 November (2012).
- 2011 From the Gender Equality Plan for 2011: A series of seminars is planned in 2010 to inform about and raise interest in the course ‘Physics and Gender’.
- Follow-up 2010: Three seminars have been given: Staffan Bergwik, Uppsala University 2010-03-25, Tomas Brage and Sara Goodman, Lund University 2010-05-05 and Andreas Ottemo, University of Gothenburg, 2010-11-22.
- 2011 From the Gender Equality Plan for 2011: Finally, a one-off action in 2010 that was not included in the Gender Equality Plan: the Physics Department had a slideshow of our female teachers on the website on International Women's Day, 8 March. This has since been repeated every year in different forms.
- 2011 From the Gender Equality Plan for 2011: The syllabus for a new course ‘Physics and Gender’ was adopted by the Department and the Faculty in 2009. For the development of this course (in collaboration with the Centre for Gender Studies in Uppsala), a first implementation in spring 2011, and subsequent evaluation, Stockholm University also received funding (of SEK 490,000) from the Delegation for Gender Equality in Higher Education. Prior to the start of the course, a series of open ‘inspirational lectures’ are organised for students and teachers at the department. Responsible: Barbro Åsman (course coordinator) and Sara Rydbeck, with support from the gender equality group.
- Follow-up 2010: The development of the course continues in co-operation with the external teachers and the course will be given as planned in the first period of the spring semester 2011. Work on informing and marketing the course to students is also continuing. The course was given in 2011-13 but is now on hold to be reorganised as several of the central teachers are no longer available.
