Credit transfer
If you have previously completed courses whose contents correspond to a course offered at Stockholm University, you may apply for a credit transfer.
In many cases, however, a transfer is not necessary and may even have disadvantages. Grades are not transferred, and in some situations the number of credits may be adjusted if the course does not match ours exactly.
Courses taken at another Swedish university can usually be included in a degree from Stockholm University without a credit transfer. In such cases, the course name, credits and grade appear in the degree certificate together with a note stating that the course was completed at another higher education institution and indicating the grading scale used. If you include a transferred course in your degree, no grade is shown and a note explains that the course has been transferred.
A credit transfer is required if you wish to include courses from foreign universities in a degree at Stockholm University. It may also be used if your previous studies correspond only to parts of one of our courses, but not the full course.
General information
A credit transfer does not generate new credits. It is simply a formal way of labelling previously earned credits so that it is clear which of our courses they correspond to, or so that credits from foreign universities can be included in a degree from Stockholm University. Credit transfers are mainly used for optional/elective courses, and in many cases a transfer is not needed at all. No grade is awarded for a transferred course.
Applying for a credit transfer
You must be admitted to and actively studying at Stockholm University in order to apply for a credit transfer. If you already know which of our courses your previous studies correspond to, you can submit your application directly in Ladok. If you are unsure, you are welcome to contact our Study Counsellors first so we can help you clarify this before you submit your application.
In Ladok you will find instructions on how to apply and which supporting documents you need to upload. Always mention, at the beginning of your application, which programme you are enrolled in, and whether you have already been in contact with someone at the Department regarding the transfer of credits. If the credit transfer concerns exchange studies, a Learning Agreement must also be attached.
