Welcome to the Department of Mathematics!

We hope that you will enjoy your studies at our department. On this page you can find useful information for starting you studies, about admission, registration, course literature, schedules, and more.

Before starting your studies

There are a number of things you need to do before starting your studies. To keep your place you must:

If your application was in the second admissions round you must reply to your offer
Pay tuition fees, unless you are exempt from them
Meet the conditions, if you are conditionally admitted
Register for your courses via Ladok, or (for some programmes) attend an introductory meeting

If you are new to Stockholm University there are a few more things that you need to do. You need to activate your student account, and of course you may need to apply for a residence permit and move to Stockholm. You can find more information about all this here:

Then you need to find your schedule, course literature, et cetera. You can find more information about that further down on this page.

Starting a master's programme

If you are starting one of our master's programmes, welcome! You can find important information about moving to Sweden (tuition fees, residence permits, insurance, accommodation, etc.) in the Pre-departure information.

Whether you need to reply to your offer depends on which admissions round you are admitted in:

If you are admitted to one of our master's programmes in the first admissions round (admissions results in March), you don't need to reply to your offer to keep your place. This applies to the master's programmes in Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning, and Computational Mathematics.
If you are admitted to a programme (or course) in the second admissions round, you always have to reply to your offer via Universityadmissions.se.

There may be an information meeting at or shortly before the start of the autumn semester, and if so we will send information about it to those admitted to the programme. If your programme has several options for which courses to take during the first semester, you choose courses at or in connection with the information meeting, and we will send out information about this as well.

Times for online registration

To keep you place on a course you have to register online, via Ladok. You need to be registered in order to take part in exams and get credits for the course. If you do not register, you lose your right to take the course.

Online registration generally opens a few weeks before the start of the semester. For most courses, online registration is open until a few weeks into the course, but for some courses registration closes earlier. You can see in Ladok when registration closes.

Exceptions to online registration

In some cases you cannot register online.

Programmes

Sometimes you cannot register online for a programme but must instead attend a compulsory meeting, a week or so before the semester starts. If you are admitted to a programme, we will e-mail you with more information about this.

Degree projects

If you are admitted to a degree project you may not be able to register online. If you can, you should, but for some projects we will instead register you once your project plan has been approved.

Exchange students

If you are an exchange student you cannot register online, instead we will register you. Ask the exchange coordinator if you have questions about this.

Conditionally admitted

You can be conditionally admitted either because you need to pay a tuition fee, or because you have not finished all courses that are given as special eligibility requirements for the course or programme you have applied for. In order to take the course or programme, you must fulfil the condition (i.e., pay your tuition fee and/or complete the relevant courses) before the start of the course or programme to which you are conditionally admitted.

If you are conditionally admitted because there are some courses you have not finished, but you expect the results from these to be reported into Ladok before the course you have applied to starts, we will usually remove the condition without you needing to contact us.

You should contact the study advisors before online registration closes if the condition still remains and you have not been able to register online. In particular, you may need to contact us in these cases:

If you are waiting for results from abroad these will not be visible in Ladok and you will need to upload them to Universityadmissions.se when you have them, and contact us to say you have done so.
If you are of the opinion that you fulfil the requirements for the course already, or if you are unsure of what is missing.

Deleted from a course

If you do not meet the entry requirements at the time of application, and it is not likely that you will have time to become eligible by course start, your admission status will be set to "unqualified", and your application will be deleted. If you feel that your eligibility has not been judged properly, contact the study advisors.

Another reason for a deleted application is that you already have been admitted to courses with higher priority. You can be admitted to at most 45 ECTS credits per term. If your application has been deleted for this reason you can reapply, if the course or programme opens for late application.

Some books may be available as e-books through the university library, and some authors publish their books for free online.

Courses given jointly with KTH may have their course web and schedule at KTH, in which case you can find information in the course catalogue or we will send out information before the course starts.

The Library

The research library at the Department of Mathematics is housed as part of the department in spacious and fresh premises. You will find the main entrance in the corridor to the right of the student office.

The library is primarily for employees but is available to students and the general public subject to availability.

Studying with a disability

Students with disabilities may be eligible for different types of support in their studies. We recommend that you start the process of applying for support as soon as you have been admitted to a course or programme at the Department of Mathematics (and, if you are applying in the second admissions round, have replied to your offer).

Contact the department at stod@math.su.se to get information about how this support will work in practice at the Department of Mathematics.

If your recommended support only consists of support like longer time at written exams, you don't need to send us your certificate with recommended support since such support is handled directly in Ladok (where you sign up for exams). If you have other kinds of recommended support you may need to send us your certificate, or book a time to show it in person if you prefer not to email it.
