Professional development course 1 Teaching and learning, on campus

COURSE
Date: Tuesday 2 February 2027
Time: 10:00 - 15:00
Location: Department of Education, Frescativägen 54, floor 5, room 2511

The course aims to support the professional development of teachers from all disciplinary areas at Stockholm University.

This course seeks to provide colleagues at the university with a platform for academic development with a specific focus on the challenges and possibilities facing university teachers today.  The course corresponds to five weeks of study (equivalent to 7,5 credits) and requires no previous teaching experience. Course meetings are held on campus.

After completing the course, you will be able to:

  • discuss and problematize your own conceptions of learning
  • plan and evaluate teaching based on higher educational research on the learning of individuals and groups
  • communicate and collaborate via digital tools and discuss how these may support learning in higher education
  • meet students in an inclusive manner and have knowledge of regulations and available support for students with disabilities
  • discuss the conditions for teaching in higher education based on knowledge of relevant national and local regulations as well as societal goals of higher education
  • demonstrate a reflective approach to one’s own academic teaching capacity, the relationship with the students and the values of higher education

Course content and structure

The course builds on the principle of professional exchanges of experiences and ideas among university teachers and so requires active participation in all sessions. The course is organized around seminar sessions and workshops introducing specific themes inviting discussion and reflection on issues of relevance to teaching in higher education, such as:

  • research on student learning in higher education
  • teaching methods
  • assessment and evaluation
  • theory informed practice
  • models for educational reflection and educational development

More specifically, the course includes five mandatory seminar days held at campus (at 10—15) and three workshops in CeUL's program. If you miss one of the mandatory seminars, you must do an extra compensatory task. If you miss more than one seminar, you must retake the course the next time it is offered. The course involves preparatory work in relation to each seminar session. Therefore, remember to set aside time for this. The course is equivalent to 7,5 credits.

Towards the end of the course, participants will be expected to articulate in writing a personal reflection of her/his own approach to teaching.

CeUL:s workshop-programme (Swedish and English speaking)

The Professional development course 1 is semi-bilingual in that participants may write their examination tasks in Swedish, and when possible and appropriate participants may engage in dialogue in Swedish throughout the course. The course employs an inclusive language policy, and lectures will be offered in a language understandable to all participants. Participants are asked to procure reading literature during the course, and this too may be in another language than English.
