UL2 Flex
Would you like to develop your teaching based on an issue that is relevant to you? In UL2 Flex, you explore your own pedagogical practice and deepen your knowledge in an area that interests you. You can also combine the course with an optional in-depth course in higher education teaching and learning.
Who is the course for?
The course is aimed at university teachers who have educational responsibilities in addition to their own teaching, for example responsibility for a module/unit, course or programme. You should also have completed basic training in higher education pedagogy, such as Professional Development Course 1 (UL1) or equivalent. The course is open to all university teachers at Stockholm University and within the Stockholm Trio, regardless of subject area.
About the course
University Teacher Education 2 Flex (UL2 Flex) is designed to be combined with an in-depth course in higher education teaching and learning that you choose based on your area of interest. In UL2 Flex, you explore issues that are relevant to your own pedagogical practice. With support from course leaders and fellow participants, you can explore questions such as how your students develop understanding in your subject or how you can enhance the learning environment in your educational context.
UL2 Flex and the in-depth course
UL2 Flex corresponds to three weeks of study (equivalent to 4.5 credits). The course can be combined with an optional in-depth course corresponding to at least two weeks of study (equivalent to 3 credits).
Greater choice and flexibility
Combining UL2 Flex with a two-week in-depth course provides the equivalent of five weeks of higher education pedagogical training, corresponding to the structure of University Teacher Education 2 (UL2). At the same time, this format gives you greater choice and flexibility. You can choose whether to take another course in higher education teaching and learning during the same term or at a later time.
An opportunity to deepen your knowledge
If you take UL2 Flex in parallel with another course in higher education teaching and learning, you can draw on knowledge and perspectives from both courses. This gives you an opportunity to deepen your knowledge in an area that is particularly relevant to you and your teaching.
Course content and structure
In UL2 Flex, you strengthen your professional role as a university teacher by developing an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning through an individual project. During the course, you explore an issue that is relevant to your own teaching and learning practice. This gives you an opportunity to develop your subject-specific pedagogical knowledge and your ability to investigate and reflect on your own practice.
The common course content focuses on an inquiry-based approach as part of academic teaching practice. You work on your individual project and use research and theory in higher education pedagogy, together with reflective practice, to support your exploration.
Upon completion of the course, participants are expected to be able to:
- Identify and explore a higher education pedagogical issue that is relevant to their own pedagogical practice, using research, theory and reflective practice.
- Draw on and analyse their own and others’ experiences of teaching and learning within their subject or educational context.
- Propose and communicate possible educational development based on the results of exploring their own practice and supported by relevant literature in higher education pedagogy.
Participation and ways of working
Participation in the course meetings is mandatory. Please note that the first course meeting cannot be compensated for. If you are unable to attend the first meeting, you will be referred to a future course offering.
Between course meetings, group supervision is offered. You are also expected to provide feedback to fellow participants and support each other in developing your individual projects.
The course is conducted in English, but discussions and supervision will, as far as possible, be adapted to participants’ preferences for using Swedish or English.
Combining UL2 Flex with an in-depth course
You apply for UL2 Flex and the in-depth course separately, regardless of whether you choose to take the courses in parallel or during different terms.
If you want the combination of UL2 Flex and an in-depth course to meet the requirements for five weeks of higher education pedagogical training for academic merit at Stockholm University, the in-depth course must correspond to two weeks of study (3 credits) and be a course in higher education teaching and learning. It cannot be an introductory course or a research/doctoral supervision course.
