On Friday, 26 September, Albanova University Center came alive with curious minds and scientific discoveries during ForskarFredag, Sweden’s celebration of the European Researchers’ Night. The day offered visitors a hands-on look at cutting-edge research, and members of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research were at the heart of the action.

The program began with Prof. Nina Kirchner from the Dept. of Physical Geography presenting Glaciäråret 2025. Professor Alasdair Skelton from the Dept. of Geological Sciences followed with the lecture Klimatkrisen och hoppet, both sparking lively discussions on glaciers, climate change, and our role in shaping the planet’s future.

Meanwhile, at the House of Science, the Department of Environmental Science (ACES) hosted a permafrost workshop led by PhD student Larissa Frey, introduced by Gustaf Hugelius (NG), who provided essential context on permafrost and its significance for climate research.

Visitors exploring the science fair were drawn to the Bolin Centre’s fossil-focused exhibition, part of the theme “Exploring the Earth beneath our feet”. Students could dive into the Homo naledi expedition with Natasha Barbolini from the Dept. of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences, or compare ancient plant fossils with modern-day species alongside PhD student Daniela Quiroz from the Swedish Museum of Natural History.

Thanks to the dedication of the Bolin Centre members and the event organizers, ForskarFredag 2025 offered an inspiring glimpse into the research that helps us understand – and protect – our planet.
