Simmons’s research documents the growing obsession with border security around the world, and shows with satellite and other evidence that borders have literally thickened in most regions. But why? And what does this portend for other international values and institutions? Border security and human rights may be on a collision course. International legal scholars and practitioners must think systematically about calls for border security can work within liberal norms and institutions.
Beth A. Simmons is the Andrea Mitchell University Professor of Law, Political Science and Business Ethics at University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Mobilizing for Human Rights: International Law in Domestic Politics (2009), which won ASIL’s And APSA’s best book award, and a forthcoming co-edited volume, The Power of Global Performance Indicators (Cambridge University Press). Her current research is on the increasing salience and hardening of international borders around the world.
