Research in analytical chemistry covers the entire analytical workflow, from sampling and separation to detection and data processing. The methods developed are applied to areas such as environmental analysis and the characterisation of novel materials, including textiles, with a particular focus on the presence of environmentally and health-hazardous organic compounds.
Modelling and machine learning approaches are used to investigate the mechanisms underlying electrospray ionisation, thereby enabling semi-quantitative, non-targeted mass spectrometric analysis of environmental samples. Other research activities focus on the study of microfluidics and the development of lab-on-a-chip technologies for microscale environmental analysis and clinical diagnostics. In addition, nanoparticles designed for medical applications are synthesised and characterised.
