Research area English

English studies is a broad field that cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries to cover research into English-language literature, linguistics, and culture, as well as pedagogy.

The research conducted at the Department of English broadly falls into three thematic strands:

  • World Englishes and multilingualism
  • History of the English language and literature
  • The teaching of English

We host several research projects funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, the Swedish Research Council, STINT, and other research funding bodies.

The quality of our research has been recognised by the Faculty of the Humanities in two leading areas: Literature, and Second Language and Bilingualism.

For the past few years, our Department has been ranked among the top 150 or even top 100 worldwide in the subject category ‘English language and literature’ by QS rankings.

English-language Literature

The department’s literary research covers a broad range of topics, focused on literature from the renaissance to the present day.

English Linguistics

We conduct research into various aspects of the English language, from its structure, history, varieties, and phonological features, to societal aspects of language use and practical applications of English linguistics.
