Research area Archaeology and Classical Studies

Researchers in the field of Archaeology and Classical studies at Stockholm University are unique in their interdisciplinary approach where research spans many humanities and natural science disciplines.

The time span for our researchers is millions of years, from the oldest time of animals and humans to the present, where the starting point is the physical remains and the material traces that they have left behind. With the help of these tracks, the living conditions and imaginary world of animals and humans are studied.

The Department of Archaeology and Classical studies has been designated one of the Faculty of Humanities' leading research areas. Our researchers are at the forefront both nationally and internationally through their many collaborations across fields of science and with other international research environments. The department has two, for Sweden, unique archaeological research laboratories and two centers: the Center for Paleogenetics and the Center for Evolutionary Cultural Research.

Archaeological Science

Archaeology with laboratory analysis is the discipline where scientific methods are used together with traditional archaeological methods and modern theory formation to solve archaeological problems.

Archaeology

We conduct archaeological research in a number of different subjects that stretch in time from the Stone Age to the present day. A particularly strong field of research is historical archaeology and contemporary archaeology.

Classical Archaeology and Ancient History

Ancient culture and Ancient history explore the Greek and Roman cultures of the Mediterranean and all areas that have ever been dependent on them. In time we move from the oldest Stone Age to about 500 AD.

Environmental Humanities

Within Environmental Humanities, researchers investigate relationships between humans and animals, and between humans and the environment, now and in the past.

Numismatics

Numismatics is the science of coins and other means of payment. Our main research field at Stockholm University is Viking-Age and Medieval coinage and coin circulation.

Osteoarchaeology

At the laboratory, several research projects are underway that concern both animal and human skeletal materials from Mesolithic to modern times.
