Research subject Portuguese Linguistics

Portuguese linguistics examines how Portuguese is structured, used over time. Why do grammar and vocabulary change? How do new expressions emerge, and why do some become a lasting part of the language? Research in this field explores both linguistic factors and the interplay between language, history, geography, and society.

At Stockholm University, we study areas such as grammar and vocabulary, linguistic variation and change, and how new ways of expressing meaning emerge and spread. Our research explores language use and linguistic efficiency, as well as language contact and the development of Portuguese in Brazil and Africa.
