Research subject Portuguese Sociolinguistics

Sociolinguistics examines the relationship between language and society. Why do people speak differently in different settings? How is language connected to identity, power, and belonging? And what happens to languages when people, cultures, and languages come into contact?

Portuguese is spoken in a wide range of social and geographical contexts and has long been shaped by multilingualism, migration, and language contact. At Stockholm University, we study areas such as linguistic variation and change, multilingualism, language contact, and language ideologies. Our research also includes language policy and linguistic landscapes, that is, how languages become visible and take on different functions in public space.
