Research area Musicology

Musicology studies music as a sounding, noted and mediated phenomenon within the framework of structural, historical, ethnological and multimedia contexts.

The musicological research conducted at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics is characterised by great diversity. However, there is an emphasis on music history (especially Swedish music and musical life from the mid-18th century to present day), music theory and music analysis, and music in relation to other media (media technology, medialization, intermediality), including theories and methodologies from narratology and cultural studies in research on multimedia art forms such as opera and film music.

Environmental Humanities

Within Environmental Humanities, researchers investigate relationships between humans and animals, and between humans and the environment, now and in the past.

Ethnomusicology

Ethnomusicology studies 'music in culture and culture in music' - that is, the relationship between musical forms, their structure, performance practices and functions, and the culture in which they exist.

Music and Media

One of the research areas of musicology is how music interacts with visual, verbal and audio modes of expression in, for example, film and opera, and how music is influenced by technological media during the recording process.

Music History

Research in Music History at Stockholm University focuses on the period from the early 18th century to the present day and deals with both music and its various practices.

Musicology of record production

Music Production research studies recorded music in different audio media (e.g. phonograms such as 78-rpm records, LPs, CDs, “streaming” on radio or media platforms, computer games) and forms of representation.

Music Theory and Music Analysis

Music theory concerns the structural properties of music and is similar to linguistics. Music analysis refers to the application of music theory to the investigation of concrete musical phenomena and processes.

Opera and musical

One of the research areas of Musicology and Theatre Studies is opera and music theater, which is analysed from an interdisciplinary and cross-aesthetic perspective that puts focus on the interplay of text, music, staging and musical-scenic performance.

Popular Music

Important genres studied in popular music research are jazz, rock and pop. But the term can be interpreted in different ways - stylistically, socially, culturally. Popular music is influenced by the music industry, technologies and modern media.
