Research area Baltic Languages

The research at Stockholm University covers the languages, literatures, and cultures of Latvia and Lithuania.

A wide breadth of coverage and an interdisciplinary approach is central to the research areas in Baltic studies at Stockholm University. Among the topics studied are Baltic historical linguistics, especially historical grammar, Baltic language structures, the history of the Baltic written languages, Baltic dialectology and sociolinguistics, sociolects, Baltic heritage laguages and Baltic cultural heritage studies.

Baltic Cultural Heritage Studies

Baltic Cultural Heritage, in its material form, but most importantly, in its immaterial form, is a new and dynamic research area at the Section of Baltic Studies.

Baltic Language History

Research in Baltic language history has been carried out at Stockholm university since the early 1970s.

Baltic Sociolinguistics

Latvian and Lithuanian are official EU-languages in Latvia and Lithuania, respectively. These languages are spoken both as first and second languages among the populations of each country.
