Research group Ecology in coastal ecosystems
We investigate ecological patterns and processes in coastal environments, the links between biodiversity, ecosystem functions and biogeochemical cycles, and the effects of human impact and restoration measures on ecosystems.
We primarily conduct applied research on coastal ecosystems in the Baltic Sea and provide scientific evidence to inform decision-making regarding the protection, restoration and sustainable use of the coast. Our research is carried out in close collaboration with researchers at other departments and in partnership with stakeholders outside academia. We also provide scientific evidence and expertise to support the Baltic Sea Centre’s policy and communications work.

We measure and seek to understand the relationships between biodiversity, human impact, climate feedbacks and ecosystem function in coastal environments. We do this, among other things, through experimental studies at the Askö Laboratory, where we investigate the links between structure and function in marine ecosystems and emissions of so-called short-lived climate forcers (SLCFs).
In the field, we also investigate the relationships between sediments, different habitats and the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and SLCFs.
The protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems is another key area we investigate. Here, we generate new knowledge about processes, ecological relationships and long-term changes, and evaluate methods for ecological restoration. We do this, for example, through large-scale restoration trials in enclosed bays that assess the implementation, effectiveness and cost of various measures.
This includes experiments and field studies to understand fundamental ecosystem processes and the effects of disturbances such as eutrophication and fishing, as well as possible measures
We also use ecological time series and historical data to analyse changes in coastal ecosystems.
