How natural and anthropogenic factors change and control the environmental conditions of the open Baltics Sea and its archipelagos, with focus on the pelagic zone

We run long-term ecological research (LTER) programmes on the effects of eutrophication and climate change on the Baltic Sea ecosystem, both in the archipelago and in the open Baltic Sea. The base of the research is the marine environmental monitoring fields sampling and long time-series of nutrient and plankton data in the pelagic zone. An important goal is to separate natural and anthropogenic influence, as loads of nutrients and the climate change. The research about the open Baltic Sea is based on the national marine monitoring and has special focus on cyanobacteria and oxygen conditions. The research on the coastal zone is performed within the Himmerfjärden project, where we evaluate the effects of treated sewage water to the bay, and the Miljöanalys (Environmental analysis) Svealand project, where the environmental status in the Uppsala, Stockholm and Södermanland archipelagos is evaluated.
