Research group Digital Transformation

Digital transformation is one of the defining organisational and societal challenges of our time. The growing integration of AI, automation, digital infrastructures and data-driven technologies is changing organisational processes and services. It is also reshaping how authority is exercised, how value is created and how organisations interact with broader institutional and societal environments.

The Digital Transformation Research Group studies these transformations as interconnected technological, organisational and institutional processes, seeking to understand how organisations can harness emerging technologies while addressing questions of governance, trust, responsibility and sustainability.

We approach digital transformation as a socio-technical process in which technologies, organisational structures, governance mechanisms, capabilities, people and institutional conditions continuously influence one another. We investigate how organisations develop the capabilities required to innovate and adapt while maintaining accountability, security, resilience and trust in increasingly complex digital environments.

A major focus of our work is the role of artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI, in organisational transformation. We examine how organisations adopt, govern and integrate AI, with particular attention to responsible and trustworthy AI, automation, human–AI collaboration, and the creation of organisational and public value. We are especially interested in how emerging technologies reshape decision-making, professional practices, organisational boundaries, and the distribution of authority and control. Alongside this, our research on digital sovereignty examines how growing dependencies on digital infrastructures, platforms, data ecosystems and AI technologies affect organisational and institutional autonomy, governance and control.

Our research is grounded in diverse institutional and national contexts, including Sweden, wider European settings, and countries across the Global South. This enables comparative insights into how digital transformation unfolds under different organisational, regulatory and societal conditions. By combining research with close engagement with organisations and policymakers, we seek to generate knowledge that helps organisations not only adapt to digital change but also actively shape it in responsible and sustainable ways.
