Introduction to Russian Literary Theory I: Russian Formalism
During the course, we study Russian formalism in its development and in relation to currents in aesthetic and linguistic theories of the time as well as artistic practices, such as futurism and constructivism. On the basis of a selection of works by prominent representatives of Russian formalism (Shklovsky, Jakobson, Ejkhenbaum, Tynyanov), we examine concepts of literary form, material and method. The course also provides an understanding of the legacy and continuation of formalism in literary theory.
