Research Traineeship in Environmental Science

Are you interested in experiencing environmental science research first-hand? This course offers the opportunity to participate in ongoing research activities and gain practical experience in a research environment.

Under supervision, you will take part in the daily work of a research laboratory or research group. Depending on the project's focus, tasks may include laboratory work, field sampling, data analysis, literature reviews, or other activities that are part of modern environmental research.

The course allows you to apply knowledge and skills acquired during previous studies while gaining insight into how scientific research is conducted. It also provides valuable experience that can support future choices regarding advanced studies, degree projects, or career paths.

What will you do?

Activities vary depending on the host research group and project, but may include:

  • laboratory analyses
  • fieldwork and environmental monitoring
  • data processing and analysis
  • literature searches and scientific reading
  • participation in research meetings and discussions

What will you gain?

By the end of the course, you will have:

  • practical experience of environmental science research
  • insight into how research organisations operate
  • experience applying previously acquired knowledge and skills in a research setting
  • a better foundation for future study and career choices

How to apply

The course is only available to students enrolled in the Environmental Science programmes at Stockholm University, at both Bachelor's and Master's level. The course is not open for external applications. Students interested in taking the course should contact the course coordinator.

Students are responsible for arranging their own placement and identifying a suitable research group and supervisor. The course coordinator can provide guidance and support in this process.

Assessment

The course is assessed through short weekly reports and an oral presentation of the work carried out during the traineeship.

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
Course reports are displayed for the three most recent course instances.
