Methods for Analysis of Organic Reactions

There are today a range of experimental techniques and computational methods for elucidating different aspects of organic reactivity and selectivity. This course will cover essential concepts and methods employed for the understanding of chemical reaction mechanisms.

This is a theoretical course that runs at 50% speed throughout the entire spring semester. It can be combined with, e.g., Research Traineeship courses given at the Department of Chemistry.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Electronic structure theory and molecular orbital theory
  • Energy surfaces and their interpretation
  • Transition state theory
  • Linear free energy relationships, Hammett plots, and quantitative structure-activity relationships
  • Principles of kinetics
  • Kinetic isotope effects
  • Principles of photochemistry
  • Analysis and quantification of environmental impact and sustainability of organic reactions
  • Structural determination using 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy.

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
