Molecular Biophysics

This course provides in-depth knowledge of properties, interactions, and reactions of biological macromolecules, as well as methods for experimental measurement and quantitative modeling of these. This includes spectroscopic quantities and measurement methods, chemical equilibrium, reaction kinetics, kinetic systems of reactions within molecular biology, stochastic processes in molecular biology, diffusion and Brownian motion, and reaction processes.

After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:

- explain different spectroscopic quantities and measurement methods (module 1).

- formulate quantitative dynamic models of biochemical reactions and reaction schemes (module 1, module 2).

- explain how reactions at the single-molecule level give rise to macroscopic observations at the ensemble level (module 1, module 2).

- simulate deterministic and stochastic reaction models (module 2).

- demonstrate an understanding of diffusion and its impact on molecular interactions and reactions (module 1).

Modules

The course consists of the following modules:
Module 1: Theory, 5 hp
Module 2: Laboratory exercises, 2.5 hp

Teaching Format

Teaching in the course consists of lectures, exercises, seminars, project work, and laboratory exercises.

Assessment

The course is examined in the following ways:

Assessment of module 1 takes place through written exams and written reports.

Assessment for module 2 takes place through written laboratory reports and oral presentations.

Examiner

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
