Literature and Gender in Japan

Japanese literature and gender-related issues have been interrelated in various ways, ranging from gendered language to authorship and audiences, and including the genre categories of women’s, gay, and queer literature. Applying a broad notion of Japanese literature, this course uses translated examples to
examine gendered positions on both textual and contextual levels.

Japanese critics and scholars engaged in gender studies will be considered to elucidate the specific historical and local significance of the texts under discussion. Key concepts from literary studies and gender studies will help to discuss the global relevance of these texts and contribute to the field of comparative literature.
