Queer East Asia

The course highlights gender and varying aspects of sexuality in both modern and premodern East Asian contexts, examining these fluid identities primarily through examples from literature, visual arts, art history, and popular media.

In this way, the course explores specific cultural expressions of what appear to be similar transnational phenomena, thereby undermining essentialist determinism and the prevailing dominance of Western models. This applies equally to seemingly universal theoretical frameworks and concepts.
