Petrology

A mafic dike intrudes metasedimentary rocks on the Isle of Mull (Scotland). The dike was later metasomatised by fluids generating garnet porphyroblasts rich in iron and aluminum, and low in calcium.
We study how magma forms, how magma composition is influenced by plate tectonic setting, and what happens as magma travels through the crust and is emplaced within it. We assess compositional changes and chemical reactions associated with metamorphism and how these are used to constrain pressure and temperature associated with different plate tectonic settings.
