Marine genetic resources (MGR) are vital genetic materials from marine organisms that present significant opportunities for commercial innovation while delivering environmental benefits, such as bioremediation for oil spills and the development of pharmaceuticals. This presentation explores the intersection of MGR and Digital Ocean Twin initiatives, which are advanced models utilizing real-time data and high-resolution virtual representations to improve ocean governance. Our findings demonstrate that MGR can serve as primary example of how integration of social and natural science can support international cooperation and enhance trust among nations, particularly in the context of negotiations under the proposed Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction treaty. Integrating biodiversity data into initiatives like the Digital Ocean Twin can play a key role in aligning conservation and sustainable development goals, promoting a balanced growth of the blue economy while ensuring the protection of ecosystems.
