Tool and Trouble: Communication in Women’s Everyday Struggles Against Gender Injustice in Argentina

In this seminar we will look into how women in Argentina struggle for gender justice in their daily lives, unpacking the roles that communication plays in those struggles. I will consider the relationship between gender justice and communication from the flip side of organized feminist activism, going beyond the attention paid to the #NiUnaMenos’ movement and its communicative strategies and shifting the focus to the day-to-day communicative work done by ordinary women —those who are not feminist leaders or organizers— in the midst of the problems they face. Drawing on two years of qualitative research conducted across Argentina in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, I will discuss what communication does and does not do for women in their messy and precarious everyday lives, and analyze the conditions of possibility that their communicative agency requires to operate as a factor that facilitates gender justice.
