Mitch Downey comments on Musk’s $10bn share giveaway
Assistant Professor Mitch Downey is featured in an Al Jazeera analysis examining Elon Musk’s pledge to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States, a package estimated to be worth more than $10 billion.

The proposal, announced just weeks before the US midterm elections, would see tens of millions of children receive shares through so-called “Trump Accounts”, tax-advantaged investment accounts created under legislation introduced by the administration of Donald Trump.
In the article, Downey, whose research focuses on political influence in the United States, highlights what he describes as the “horseshoe” nature of the proposal. He notes that the idea bears similarities to long-standing progressive proposals for universal child investment accounts designed to reduce wealth inequality, but has now gained momentum through a partnership between Musk and the Trump administration.
Downey also argues that while the pledge does not appear to raise legal concerns, it contributes to broader debates about the role of wealthy donors in American politics and election campaigns.
