Watch The Value of Disability on Demand

What makes disability good or bad? Does disability in itself reduce a person's well-being, or should it be understood as a natural form of human diversity? These were some of the questions explored during the seminar The Value of Disability, held on 9 October 2026.
The seminar is now available to watch on demand.

The event took its starting point from philosopher Elizabeth Barnes's mere-difference view, which argues that disability in itself does not make a person's life go worse. Speakers examined arguments for and against this position, drawing on both philosophical analysis and empirical evidence.

The programme featured presentations by Elizabeth Barnes (University of Virginia), Tom Shakespeare (The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) and Hanna Bertilsdotter Rosqvist (Karlstad University). The seminar was introduced by Simo Vehmas from Stockholm University.

The discussions provide valuable insights for researchers, students, professionals, and anyone interested in disability studies, inclusion, and human well-being.
