The Romance Seminar: Yann Batto
Le Chronotope et le roman, Marthe, histoire d'une fille de Huysmans
The term chronotope was first introduced in a literary context by Michail Bakhtin in the late 1930s when his essay “Forms of Time and if the Chronotope in the Novel: Notes toward a Historical Poetic” was published. Central to my research, this analytical tool offers possibilities to investigate novels from a perspective which a formalist, or a structuralist approach, does not allow, that of by scrutinizing temporal and spatial configurations in a text on different levels. This seminar will be the occasion to present a chronotropic analysis of Huysmans’s first published novel: Marthe, histoire d’une fille, commonly associated with Zolian naturalism, while establishing a bridge with Walter Benjamin’s work on modernity in a Parisian context.
