- I wrote in the motivation in my application that I like to make contacts and meet people in the cross section of mathematicians and computer scientists. And it's always fun to meet people who are super committed to what they're doing, says Anna, who is a PhD student in computational mathematics. Johan is also looking forward to participating in this year's forum:
- I applied to HLF specifically to discuss the part of my research that concerns reliable machine learning. As these systems automate more and more decision-making processes, I see a growing need for rigorous uncertainty quantification so that we can actually trust them. Discussing the mathematical foundations with the researchers who shaped the field will be fantastic fun, says Johan, who is also a PhD student in computational mathematics.
Heidelberg Laureate Forum is a conference for networking among 200 selected young researchers in mathematics and computer science. The aim is to provide space for creating and developing ideas. The conference starts on September 13 and runs for a week.
- Maybe I can learn something, or teach someone else something. Or maybe come up with an idea for a research project, says Anna.
