Anders Martin-Löf has passed away

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Anders Martin-Löf, Professor Emeritus of our department, passed away a few days ago at the age of nearly 86.

Anders Martin-Löf

Anders Martin-Löf.

Anders was an outstanding scholar, well known in Sweden and internationally. He studied Engineering Physics at KTH and subsequently pursued doctoral studies, first in optimization theory at KTH and then at MIT in the United States during the academic year 1967/68. He continued his research in mathematical statistics at Rockefeller University in New York in 1970/71, working on probability theory and its applications to statistical mechanics. After returning to KTH, this work led to his doctoral degree in 1973.

In the 1980s, his research interests turned toward actuarial mathematics. In 1987, he was appointed holder of the historic Cramér Professorship in Insurance Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. At that time, he joined the department from Folksam, when the department was still located on Hagagatan.

Those of us who knew Anders remember him as a colleague with an exceptionally open mind, always generous with his time and eager to support younger researchers in developing their scientific ideas. Colleagues who collaborated closely with him and knew him even better will share more reflections in the near future.
