New SIPLR issue explores legal research over time

How does legal research stand the test of time? The latest issue of Stockholm University Intellectual Property Law Review (SIPLR) explores this question by inviting former doctoral researchers to revisit their own work from a contemporary perspective.

SIPLR is a journal of legal scholarship with a focus on European Intellectual Property Law. The Editorial Board comprises of students and the programme directors of the Master’s Programme ‘European Intellectual Property Law’.

“The latest issue of the Stockholm University Intellectual Property Law Review (SIPLR) brings together former doctoral researchers who revisit their own research projects to reflect on how their research questions and conclusions hold up today. It also involves examining how the field has evolved over time, to what extent earlier research findings remain relevant, and whether their perspectives on the subject have changed,” says Frantzeska Papadopoulou, Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Stockholm University and editor‑in‑chief of SIPLR.

Rather than summarising their dissertations, the contributors return to the questions that once shaped their research and consider how legal, technological and societal developments may have changed the answers over time. The result is a collection of reflections on the temporal dimension of legal scholarship and on how intellectual property law evolves alongside the world it seeks to regulate.

From doctoral research to academic careers

Several of the contributors completed their doctoral studies at SU Law and have since built careers in a range of academic, policy and professional contexts. While some are today active as researchers and teachers at the Department of Law, others work in leading positions outside academia, reflecting the diverse trajectories of doctoral graduates and the broad societal relevance of legal research.

The issue includes contributions from:

  • Christina Wainikka, Policy Expert in Intellectual Property at Svenskt Näringsliv.
  • Frantzeska Papadopoulou, Professor in Intellectual Property Law at Stockholm University,
  • Lydia Lundstedt, Associate professor in Private International Law at Stockholm University,
  • Branka Marušić, Senior lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at Stockholm University,
  • Merit Berlips Persson, Senior Attorney at Law specialising in intellectual property rights and marketing law at AWA, and;
  • Anna Horn, Senior Researcher in Law at the Swedish Institute for European Policy Studies (SIEPS).

Where students and research meet

SIPLR is a student-led academic journal focusing on European intellectual property law. Its editorial committee consists of students and programme directors affiliated with the Master’s Programme in European Intellectual Property Law at Stockholm University. The student members of the editorial board are selected during the first semester of the programme.

For the students involved, the journal offers a valuable opportunity to engage with current legal debates, strengthen their academic writing and analytical skills, and gain hands‑on experience of scholarly publishing. SIPLR thus serves not only as a platform for scholarly exchange but also as an important part of the international and research‑driven environment that characterises the Department of Law at Stockholm University.

The journal typically publishes one to two issues per year.
