New Honorary Doctor in Law

Stockholm University has appointed its 2026 honorary doctors, who have made distinguished contributions to the university’s research and education. In law, the honorary doctorate is awarded to Ugo Pagallo, Professor of Philosophy of Law and Legal Informatics at the University of Turin.

Ugo Pagallo is Professor of Philosophy of Law and Legal Informatics at the University of Turin, Italy. He is internationally recognised for his research in legal philosophy, legal informatics, and the relationship between law and emerging technologies.

His work on artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and digitalisation has had a significant impact both in academic scholarship and in international policy processes. Through his research, Pagallo has contributed to the development of key legal and normative frameworks for understanding and governing technological change in society.

A long-standing collaboration

For many years, Pagallo has maintained a close relationship with the Faculty of Law at Stockholm University. Through teaching, research collaboration, and international networking, he has contributed to strengthening the department’s research environment and international profile.

– For us at the Faculty of Law, Ugo Pagallo has been far more than an internationally leading scholar. He has been an intellectual force who has profoundly shaped the way our faculty thinks about law, technology, and society, says Mauro Zamboni, Professor of Jurisprudence at Stockholm University.

– Through his generosity, analytical sharpness, and continuous presence in our seminars and doctoral programmes, Pagallo has helped shape both research directions and generations of young legal scholars. He has also served as a true bridge-builder between Stockholm University and the international research community, thereby strengthening our faculty’s position as a leading environment for research in law and informatics.

WHAT IS AN HONORARY DOCTORATE?

Awarding honorary doctorates is a tradition at Swedish universities and colleges. An honorary doctorate is an award that expresses the university's appreciation of outstanding contributions within one of the university's areas of activity.
