The honorary doctorate at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in areas important to the university’s work. The distinction recognises Leviner in particular for her efforts to highlight and strengthen children’s rights in both research and public debate.

Pernilla Leviner is Professor of Public Law at the Faculty of Law at Stockholm University and is affiliated with the Stockholm Centre for the Rights of the Child. Her research primarily addresses issues at the intersection of social law, family law and children’s rights, with a focus on the relationship between the state, the family and the individual, as well as the responsibilities and powers of public authorities.

In her research, she has examined topics such as children’s rights within the child welfare system, children’s participation in legal processes, and the significance of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in Swedish law. In 2022, Leviner was awarded the H. M. The King’s Medal for her work, and since 2024 she has served on the jury for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. In 2025, she became Dean of the Faculty of Law at Stockholm University, which, according to UiT, demonstrates her leadership and commitment to society.

The appointment takes place within UiT’s academic tradition of honouring individuals who have made significant contributions to research, education or societal development. The award ceremony will take place in Tromsø later this spring.
