Lindell and Ugembe's Article Selected as Featured Paper in IDPR

A new article by Ilda Lindell, researcher at the Department of Human Geography, and Zeferino Ugembe has been chosen as the Featured Article in International Development Planning Review (IDPR) volume 48.1-2.

The article, titled "The necropolitics of informality: contested strategies of banishment, carceralisation and peripheralisation", introduces "necropolitics of informality" as an analytical lens to examine how violence governs urban informality in Southern cities. Drawing on Achille Mbembe's concept of necropolitics—a mode of rule beyond law that devalues certain lives through violence—the authors highlight strategies like banishment, carceralisation, and peripheralisation in Maputo, Mozambique, where street vendors faced expulsion, confinement, and relocation amid a pandemic pretext, leading to dispossession and resistance.

The article is free to read for a limited time via Open Access as part of Liverpool University Press's initiative; access it on the publisher's blog.

Ilda Lindell is Associate professor in Human Geography at Stockholm University.
Zeferino Ugembe is a researcher at Centro de Estudos Africanos, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Maputo.
