Career influencers and the mediation of international students' university-to-work transitions

Existing scholarship has highlighted how international students navigate university-to-work transitions, the barriers they face in securing post-study employment in their study destinations, and the types of ‘employability capitals’ they need to enhance their job prospects.

This paper contributes to this research through a study of a new set of actors who are seeking to support international students’ employability: career influencers on social media. It presents preliminary findings from an analysis of the social media accounts of five Indian-origin career influencers.

Having migrated to Germany, the UK, the US, or Canada, all five have acquired large followings through the social media content they produce on securing employment in their respective destination countries, targeted primarily at Indian international students and graduates in these countries.

The paper examines how these influencers operate simultaneously as career coaches, policy intermediaries, and commercial actors, translating employment and immigration systems into accessible, actionable, and monetisable guidance for international students and graduates. The paper argues that, through these activities, career influencers produce new digital migration infrastructures that mediate Indian international students’ university-to-work transitions.

”Framtiden bor hos oss” / ”The Future Lives With Us”

The image of vulnerable suburban areas is characterized by gang crime, unemployment, exclusion and racism. But behind the headlines, life goes on, something that is rarely seen in news reporting. In the documentary ”The Future Lives With Us”, journalist Jan Scherman and his friend Khalid Mohammed visit suburban areas in Gothenburg to provide a picture of everyday life behind the headlines – a picture of hope and faith in the future.

Seminar participants will watch the documentary and the following discussion will be lead by prof. Ali Osman and prof. Stefan Lund.
