The study presents a method for measuring how inflation affects households with different income levels, even when detailed data on individual spending are not available. Using US data, the researchers find that lower-income households have faced higher inflation than higher-income households over time. The gap has averaged 0.41 percentage points per year since 1959 and was 1.3 percentage points during the inflation surge in 2022.
