New security challenges at the center of international conference at Stockholm University
Security experts and researchers from across Europe and the rest of the world gathered last week at Stockholm University for the European Security Studies Conference (ESSC) 2026, one of the continent’s leading academic conferences on security issues. The conference took place on June 11–12, bringing together a broad group of participants to discuss the evolving challenges shaping European and global security.

Professor Magnus Petersson, one of the key organizers, welcomed the attendees and participants.
The conference is jointly organized by the European Initiative for Security Studies (EISS), COST Action NetSec, and the Department of Economic History and International Relations at Stockholm University. The conference serves as a central forum for interdisciplinary research dialogue on geopolitics, defense, and strategic policy.
‘We want to create space for open and well‑informed discussion in a time of rapid geopolitical change,’ says one of the conference organizers.
Focus on a changing security landscape
This year’s conference is held against the backdrop of increased global uncertainty, where participants analyze how Europe can address new threats and shifting alliances. The opening panel, ‘Taking the pulse of European security in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment,’ sets the tone by highlighting the strategic challenges facing the continent.
Throughout the conference, topics ranged from traditional defense issues to new areas such as technological competition and digital governance. Panels addressed subjects including cyber infrastructure, peacebuilding efforts, nuclear weapons and deterrence, and the conflicts of the future.

The program reflects the complexity of modern threats — from digital vulnerability to societal resilience,’ says one of the participants.
A platform for collaboration
ESSC 2026 not only reflects today’s priorities but also aims to anticipate future developments in defense and international cooperation. With its combination of expert knowledge, interdisciplinary perspectives, and forward‑looking discussions, the conference underscores the importance of continued dialogue on the security challenges of our time.
Several plenary sessions were also broadcasted live, making it possible for a wider audience to follow the discussions.
As Europe navigates an increasingly complex security landscape, conferences like ESSC play a crucial role in shaping the debate and informing decision‑making.
