Kaly Halkawt's thesis - about what fan culture means in young people's everyday lives
What does it mean to be a devoted fan? In her research, Kaly Halkawt has been following young fans of queer pop culture, from enchantment to disenchantment. In her dissertation, she shows how fan culture can create community, joy, comfort, and rest in young people's everyday lives.
For about a year, Kaly Halkawt followed a group of young people who are fans of queer pop culture, especially the Swedish TV series Young Royals. She tagged along with the participants to things like the cinema, concerts, and visits to filming locations. She also engaged with their fan art and other activities within fan culture.
On September 4, 2026, Kaly Halkawt Lundström defends her dissertation in child and youth studies at Stockholm University.
