Language prediction has been proposed to rely on the language production system, with comprehenders recruiting production mechanisms to anticipate upcoming words. Previous work has provided evidence in support of the prediction-by-production account (Pickering & Gambi, 2018), at least in speakers’ first language (L1). Whether the same mechanisms support prediction in a second language (L2), however, remains an open question, as L2 production is typically slower and less fluent.

In this talk, we will first review the evidence supporting the involvement of production mechanisms in L1 prediction. We will then present recent work extending these paradigms to bilingual speakers, examining prediction in both their L1 and L2. By replicating previous findings in the L1 and testing whether similar effects are also observed in the L2, these studies provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying predictive language processing and the extent to which they are shared across first and second language processing.
